what this is

I currently work as a software and systems architect at my day job.  At the University of New Mexico (UNM), I research policy management systems and cloud system architectures.  In both roles, I need to keep up to speed with current technology; not only do I need to know about it, I need to really know it.  Overall I really enjoy what I do - I'm a builder at heart, I love putting things together and seeing them work, tinkering with how they're assembled, that kind of thing.  This blog is where I can keep a record of what I've done so I can refer to it later.  Hopefully, somebody else can get something out of it too.

I'm planning to keep a record of projects I'm doing to maintain an in-depth understanding of emerging, interesting technologies.  I'll also keep a record of my ongoing research here as I'm writing conference and journal papers when I'm sporting my academic hat.  It won't be as rigorous here as submitted work will be, but hopefully it'll still be useful to somebody else perhaps working in the same area.

I'll also track my scribblings characterized by type and subject.  Types will refer to the kind of subject I'm covering - foundational work will not have any specific application, but will be more general study of an area, like how Heroku works, for example.  Project work will be specifically focused on some kind of deliverable, like a small application or system of some kind.  Subjects will refer to the kind of technology used usually - like cucumber or node.js or clojure.  This way hopefully, over time, folks will be able to more easily find useful stuff.

Please feel free to comment on anything you see; good constructive feedback is so tough to come by that I'm happy to sort through the bad, insulting feedback to get it.  So please, thanks for reading anything I've put together whether you comment or not! I hope it's in some way useful, even if as an example of how not to blog.
